Hartley Simpson was born in Tilton, New Hampshire in 1900. He received his B.A. degree from Bowdoin College in 1922 and was a student at Cornell University from 1923-1926. Simpson was an assistant professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh from 1926-1929. He spent the remainder of his career at Yale University and held the positions of research assistant in history (1930-1942), research associate (1942-1946), and associate professor (1947-1967).
